  15. SYMPTOMS
  16. ========

  18. After you load the ProAudio Spectrum 16 driver and restart Windows NT,
  19. you may receive a Service Control Manager error message referring you
  20. to the Event Viewer. The Event Viewer message states that a MIDI
  21. driver is not installed or configured correctly or "Can't find OPL
  22. Synthesizer." This error message does not necessarily prevent you from
  23. playing .WAV files.
  24.  
  25. CAUSE
  26. =====
  27.  
  28. In order to play MIDI files with the ProAudio Spectrum 16 card, you
  29. must have the Media Vision OPL3 FM Synthesizer Driver loaded. The OPL3
  30. FM Synthesizer Driver should load automatically when the Pro Audio
  31. Spectrum 16 driver is loaded, although in some cases, the OPL3 FM
  32. Synthesizer Driver is not loaded successfully.

  34. RESOLUTION

  37. Following are possible work arounds:
  38.  
  39. 1. Verify that MVI OPL3 is the current selection in MIDI Mapper.
  40.  
  41. 2. Verify that MIDI Synthesizer is not loaded in Control Panel, Drivers.
  42.  
  43. 3. Remove the Pro Audio Spectrum 16 driver, then reinstall the driver.
  44.  
  45. 4. Add the FMClockOverride setting to the Windows NT Registry. Media
  46.    Vision has confirmed incompatibilities between unspecified motherboard
  47.    chip sets and the chip sets on the Pro Audio Spectrum 16 card.
  48.    Differences in oscillator speed, which is responsible for FM
  49.    synthesis, can cause inconsistencies in sound quality. Adding the
  50.    FMClockOverride parameter may solve this problem.
  51.  
  52. WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-
  53. wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT to correct
  54. them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the
  55. use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk.

  57. 1. Run REGEDT32.EXE.
  58.  
  59. 2. Select the following subkey:
  60.  
  61.       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
  62.       \MVAudio\Parameters
  63.  
  64. 3. From the Edit menu, choose Add Value.
  65.  
  66. 4. The parameters for the new value should be the following:
  67.  
  68.       Value Name:  FMClockOverride (case sensitive)
  69.       Data Type: REG_DWORD
  70.       Data:  1
  71.       Radix:  Hex
  72.  
  73. NOTE: Media Vision only supports the Pro Audio Spectrum 16 adapter in
  74. computers with bus speed set to 8 megahertz. Bus speed is not the same
  75. as CPU speed.
